Text Limit On Discussions Forums Description Fields

I discovered that there is a "hidden" limit to how much text (words) can be added to a discussion forum description field. The problem is that there is NO error message stating the allowed field length. The current limit is probably around 4 lines of text or about 4 lines of text, but it would be nice to know exactly what the max. limit is.

Thanks for addressing this problem and maybe sending us an email with more details about this problem.

Michael - I discovered the same thing myself today!  The character limit is 255 characters and you are right, we do not let you know that and we should.  We look forward to fixing that.

Ahh! that might explain my recent problems. Is this a change that has just come in in the past couple of weeks? I keep trying to update my description area and failing.... page defaults back to the old version.

Not so sure now.... have posted long text in this area in the past. Can post our YouTube video but that is all. The edit window wont take text at all... it all seems broken and pretty disturbing... what else is broken? Shaken!

Rick,
We can't post videos in the Forum heading description text fields. As Shaun mentioned, these text fields are limited to entering up to 255 characters or about 4 lines of text.

If you're having other problems (not related directly to the text limitation) you should probably contact Shaun directly via his email.

Best regards,
Michael

Michael and Shaun,

Are we talking about the Summary Page description field?

I've got a YouTube video posted on one of my group sites no worries.

http://mentawaisanctuary.collectivex.com/main/summary

And I have about 200 words in the same field as the video.

I did have that video at the mentawai::fusion site but have just changed that for flash banner and about 750 words.

Found that Safari somehow corrupts the html and causes line spacing issues. It is working now???? dont ask me why! Because of the linespacing issues I'm now editing only in FireFox.

The key seems to be to embed flash or video code in html mode. In the past it seemed to work in normal edit mode but not any more.... Guess your team are tweaking the code to prepare for the format change.

Please pass on this advice to others. It cost me some time and caused some stress.

Cheers

Rick,

Thanks for bringing that up! So to clarify let me emphasize that the problem I experienced was on the Discussions Forums description fields. The summary page seems to allow much more text with no limitation that I've seen yet, but the description fields on the Discussion page currently have a 255 character limit, which is about 4 lines of text.

I'll edit my post (at top) to reflect this.
Regards,
Michael

Everyone,

This release has been updated to provide, at the very least, error messages when text that is entered exceeds the limits for a particular field.

Additionally, on fields where browsers still do not support limiting the number of characters entered (such as multi-row text entry fields), the site will interactively provide you with feedback as you type to tell you how many characters are left in the field.  I believe that we've included all such places that limit the number of characters that can be entered in to the field.

Until just a few moments ago, a very small typo had inhibited the 2nd feature above (interactive feedback) from working on these text entry fields.  This should now be fixed - and this includes the description field when editing/adding forums.
