Email Blasts and Reported Number of Pending Members

A group manager asked me this question today:
"When I just sent out my e-mail blast the message I got was that it was sent to the active members and 30+ pending members. However, there are well over 200+ pending members. Do you know why this happened or who I might find out more from?"
Does anybody know why a message would only be sent to some pending members? Could this possibly be a bug?
Thanks,
Morgan

Hi - I wanted to bring up this issue as well.
Ini short, we are using our CollectiveX groupsites to send email blasts to pending members. Often we'll have several hundred pending members in a group who have not declined. But, when we send emails to pending members, we get a very low number of emails sent.
Is there a reason pending members would not be receiving email blasts from managers? How can we correct this?
Thanks!
Stephen
I would like to revive this question again - I am having some serious concerns on emailing pending members.
One of our newest groups has about 50 pending members, and yet, when we sent out an email blast today, the email did not go out to any pending, although we checked the box to do so.
This is a big concern, because we are encouraging all of our affiliates to use the pending member list as a passive member list to send out e-newsletters to members of our database.
Is this a bug? Help!
Guys,
Sorry it took me so long to respond to this... somehow I missed it.
Here is the logic surrounding 'email blasts to pending members':
The email blast to pending members feature has always been intended to serve as a reminder to join the Groupsite.
Consequently, once a pending member has been sent a total of 10 reminders, CollectiveX stops emailing them. Email blasts are considered a join reminder. We instituted this policy because we've had problems with spammers attempting to use the 'email blast to pending members' feature to spam people with messages using CollectiveX servers. As an additional safeguard against spam, we also limit email blasts to pending members to 1 email per 24 hours. If anyone receives 10 emails from a Groupsite and doesn't join, it's usually an indication that they are not interested. The email blast to pending members feature was never meant to serve as a newsletter mechanism for non-members.
I hope this helps shed light on why we've instituted this measure. You'd be surprised to learn how many 'pending members' don't hit decline but take the time to report CollectiveX as spammers to their ISPs instead.
Hi Clarence,
Thank you for the clarification. I did not know about this aspect of sending email to pending members.
This put our groups in a difficult situation. We have invited all of our members in our database who have requested email to join CollectiveX, so that we can communicate to them at regional levels. We set it up so that only managers can send email blasts, and so had been planning on using "pending members" as a "passive member" situation. Using it this way was intended to solve a long-standing problem for our organization - sharing our regional members list with our 12 regional affiliates, while still allowing members to opt out of receiving email.
Is there a way we can still keep our passive mailing list through CollectiveX?
I had sent out an email to around 3000 plus email ids to join the group and I have been getting a message which indicates that I have excedded the quota. Could please do let us know how many emails invites can be sent per day. Also if the emails have not been sent..how do we find out which ones have not gone out.
Our group(nasscom-emerge.collectivex.com) there are around 300 members who have signed up
Appreciate your help.
Regards,
Avinash
Hi there, We have not been able to send out invites to people as it shows up a message saying that you have exhausted your daily limit. Please do let me know how we could send out invites to users.
Also how do we track the users who have not got the invites....as we have sent it from our side....will they appear somewhere in the database...that they have not received?
Regards,
Avinash
Avinash - To protect against the abuse of our invite feature, we have built logic into the system that limits how many members can be invited based on group acceptance rate as will as ratios of outstanding invites to accepted invites. This prevents rogue managers from using our platform as a spamming tool.
Your current ratios are fine (1703 pending members, 383 accepted and only 1 decline). You also have no "bounced" invites which shows us that you are inviting real people as opposed to blasting a rented list (which is always uncool).
For now, keep your daily invites under 1,000 and the system should not throttle your growth. Feel free to contact me privately if you feel your group needs special consideration.
As for viewing who has received invites, under the Manager tab and then the "Pending Members" subtab, you can see status of active, declined and bounced emails. We do not track whether the invite has actually been read (read receipt).
I hope that helps. Please let me know if you have additional questions.
Thanks,
Shaun
