Lists not working?

Has anyone been able to insert Bulleted or Numbered lists using '*' and '#' formatting? It is not working for me.
here is an example:
# item 1
* bulleted list
and as you can see neither is working, what am I doing wrong? I have the empty spaces after each tag but still no go.

These are fixed now, Jake.
The problem was that original designers of our stylesheet did some pretty strange things that we had yet to reverse.
Rather than reengineer the entire CSS for our site, I just applied some sensible defaults for user-edited areas. Honestly, that's probably a good thing to have, period, so in the future we'll be able to easily take care of any styles that may propagate undesirably from other parts of the site.
