Emailing Issues

In a few of my groups we are having issues with emailing from the site. Either the emails are not reaching the person we wrote to, or if it did, their responding email was bounced back to them as though the email in our profiles are not correct.

What kinds of emails are you talking about? Since I'm unaware of the details of your poblem, let me give you some general information.

The only system-generated emails which do not have *DO NOT REPLY* specified as the Reply-To address are Private Messages, RSVP Invitations, and Email Blasts. Furthermore, if the sender of the message has chosen to hide their contact information, the RSVP and Email Blast messages will not have their Reply-To address.

In other words, you cannot reply to most of the system-generated emails as they do not actually come from the user themself. The exception is Private Messages, which always come from the sending user.

If you can let me know which kinds of emails you're talking about and point me to the users which you are having problems sending messages to, then maybe I can troubleshoot.

I should point out, however, that we are not in control over the email addresses that users provide to us. They very well may be invalid addresses and that is why they are bouncing: they don't have an account matching the email address that they've given us.

I have just started using the "send private message" function and as yet have not had any problems. This is a cool little feature.

Brooke, if you can give me some more details about the problem, I can see if it's anything within our control. (See my post above)

I will wait to hear more feedback from you before closing this lbug.

Hi Joe! Sorry for the long wait. I was referring to the Private Messages sent. When someone writes to another member by sending them a Private Message, the other member is either not receiving the message or is getting their reply bounced back to them.

Thanks!

Private messages use the user's email. So, once it has left our system it is out of our control.

If the messages are being blocked by SPAM filters, then have your users whitelist the "notifier@collectivex.com" email address.

I'll move this topic into the "Closed Bug Reports" forum.

Strangely enough, I used to get them, but not anymore. I sent test messages from another user account, but I don't see them in my junk mail inbox either. This was especially bothersome given that I've lost some business messages this way (and who knows how many others), and I'm just about to tell everyone in our group not to depend on the private message feature.

... and I just got the reply to this message from notifier@collectivex.com, so that's not the problem there.

Neil,

I just sent you a test message. Let me know if you get it. I've been using private messages and I haven't had any problem, so perhaps it's an isolated issue.

More details might help:

* Are you in "View All" mode when you send the message? If not, which group are you sending the message from?

* Are you sending the message from a profile page or a discussion page?

* Can you send me info on which test user you're using? I can log in as that user and try it out myself.

I just click on the 'Send private message' icon - I don't know what 'View All' is, nor recall ever being in that mode when doing anything at all.

I tried sending it from either the profile page or discussion page with no luck.

Other people have sent me private messages and I didn't get them - it doesn't matter. I didn't get yours for instance.

"View All" is when you've selected "Neil's CollectiveX Network" from the group dropdown in the upper-right corner of the page. It gives you an aggregated view of all your groups at once. I was trying to see if you were in that mode when sending the message, or whether you were just looking at one group.

Anyhow, I've made a minor change to the system. Let's see if this fixes it for you. I'm going to send you another test message.

I never did figure out why myself and other group members had issues with emailing through the private function, but I started noticing that I wasn't receiving anything. No activities reports, no discussions started, calendar invites and so on. I went into my profile and my email address was no longer listed. Once I added my email to my profile again, I haven't had any problems.

Yep, my notifications are fine, just the private messages aren't working.

I still didn't get Joe's last private message - maybe he should try sending you one, Brooke.

Well, Neil, I'm definitely stumped.

I can see the email headers being sent out which are all fine. I can receive the email myself just fine.

Have you received any of my private messages today?

Unfortunately no.

I guess there's no way to remove the 'Send private message' feature from my profile? I'd hate to think of how many people, increasingly more each month, are thinking I'm completely ignoring them. Not good at all.

Here's the message from my web host, who are pretty top notch guys,

_"What is the IP address that the mail would be coming from? I'm not showing anything in your mail logs from that email address, so my best guess is that the mail is never making it to your server. If it's ACL'ed by our firewall that might be a cause, it may also be in your servers firewall. If I have the IP address I can search to determine the cause of blockage."_

Here's the support ticket I sent to them of which they're responding to,

_"Part of my business is to coordinate several social networks on the CollectiveX.com platform, and there's a common feature on all of these Web 2.0 platforms called 'send private message', which in this case sends me an email from the system. In this case, the sender is from 'notifier@collectivex.com'. However, I'm not getting any! I sent a test message at 10:19 am ET with the subject line: 'Test 1019 for Liquid Web'. Why am I not getting these?"_
