I just sent this blast:
To All CollectiveX Champions,
If you've received spam through the private message feature in CollectiveX Champions or any other public CollectiveX-powered Groupsite. We apologize. We are working on a solution to detect and stop private message spam.
I have created a discussion from this email blast. Feel free to weigh-in and discuss this matter openly with us.
Sincerely,
The CollectiveX Team

This is very good. Thank your for the insight and the link. I keep forgetting about NPR's multimedia resources. I will use this as a learning tool for future students at my nonprofit learning center.
In the end, reporting this spammer or "waster" paid off for me. I get the privilege of participating in a community of knowledge that is beneficial to my business and to me. I have learned a lot through this exchange.
I also recieved the same email.
Yep two lsetters so far, I have reported it to the Manager, I dont want collective x to encourage am and frauds . Be choosy and I am happy for your immediate reaction to resolve the issue.
Thanks in advance.
Having recently switched to CollectiveX from a PHPBB format bulletin board, I really hope that this isn't a harbinger of things to come. PHPBB started off as an excellent tool, however spammers quickly figured out how to backend into the code to send messages via the discussion threads. They did this by creating "bots" that hunted for common threads in the PHP code that drove all sites on the platform, then wrote corresponding code to "infiltrate" the system and send messages en masse.
I have been incredibly impressed with CollectiveX and only caution the developers to protect your code as best you can from any attacks that could be easily automated by compromising it. It seems like you're doing an excellent job so far.
Does anyone know if these spam attacks are happening only on "public" groups listed in the directory, or are they also hitting the locked-down private groups as well? That could be a clue to their origins and methods.
I was wondering that myself. I cannot tell which groupsite this came from. I have two groupsite and I belong to the Champions group as well. Based on the responses it looks like it might have been the Champion group, which is public. I believe my two semi-private sites are secure and that my group members did not receive the same email. If they had I would have heard about it by now.
Kudos to Shuan and the rest of the gang for the fast response.
Folks - This is only happening in "public" Groupsites. That being said, we are working on shutting the door on this even within public groups.
Shaun
I also received this spam email. Without any second thought, I have to delete it.
Thanks a lot for working to solve this issue.
Regards to All,

Hi Rob,
To my knowledge, it's been happening on The Green Group. At least that's been my assessment. Not sure which groups you and I share, but CTGS has been clean so far. This is another reason I wanted to limit CTGS to be by invitation and/or approval only, and locally based.
Best,
Heather
I'm on 3 groups (I started up two of my own based on the success of CGS). So far, I haven't received one piece of spam from any of them - quite a feat these days.
The CollectiveX folks told me that the spam was only happening on "public" groups that are listed in their online directory...which makes sense.
Best,
Rob
