Custom Favorites Icon/ removing undesirables

Am having problems getting my custom favorites icon to appear instead of the default. Have tried downloading and saving, but to no avail.  I am using a 16x 16 in icon format.  It is NOT JPEG, GIF or any other format. Noticed that the default icon is 16X16 icon.  What am I doing wrong?

I also LOVE to get rid of or delete the 'Key Connections', 'Member Objectives', the 'Group Blog' that are useless to my group.  Hope I am not stuck with them.  Thanks for your guidance.

Hi Dr. Trocar,

We have discussed internally including this functionality, however, it does not currently exist.  While today Groupsites do offer some flexibility in your navigation bar, we don't allow you to rename, reorganize or delete the COMMUNICATE, SHARE, NETWORK or MY SETTINGS tabs.  The reason is so users can enjoy a simple user interface, with consistent navigation in all of their groups, with a single log-in.

Regarding Key Connections etc.,  you cannot remove/turn off any of the subtabs.  Menu customization is limited to renaming the Summary tab, enable/disabling subgroups, adding "more" pages and/or promoting one subtab to the main navigation level.

You can learn more about your navigation bar tabs here:  http://champions.groupsite.com/post/understanding-the-groupsite-navigation-bar

Regarding your custom favorite icon, sometimes while the file is being placed in the appropriate size, the browser bar will spin for about 20 seconds before you will see the change.  Please let me know if you are still experiencing a problem.

Thank you, Celeste.

The custom Favorites Icon has never downloaded sucessfully, let alone do any spinning.  I have downloaded and re-downloaded many times to no avail.  No big deal, but it would be nice to use this feature.

Like I say, it is a 16x16 icon format.   Thanks again.

Hi Dr. Trocar,

I see your custom favorite Icon displayed in your Groupsite.  It is "UP" in Black and White. Here is a screen shot (partial) Attachment.Screen shot 2010-11-23 at 5.05.22 PM.png

Attachment.Custom Favorites Icon.bmpVery interesting, I don't see it anywhere.  Is it in the addreess bar?  I have MSN and most icons show up on the Favorite menu.  I am showing the Groupsite.com default.

Here is another screen shot of what I see when going to your site's URL.  Please send me a screen shot what you see. Attachment.Screen shot 2010-11-23 at 6.39.37 PM.png

Yes, it is in the address bar.  We can continue this conversation from Support@groupsite.com.

I have been thinking about this since I read it a few weeks back.   I think, at least from the small slice of it I can see, GroupSite is misunderstanding its business model.

I figure there are three kinds of site groupings (on the dimension important here):

1. Users join a single Groupsite group.

2. Users join many Groupsite groups, but they are all management by the same administrator.

3. Users join many Groupsite groups, all managed by different administrators.

In the first category, customization does not matter to the user since the user sees only one view anyway.

The decision to limit customization so that users have a similar experience across different Groupsites plays to the third category.  You guys know how common this is; I have no clue.

Permitting a maximum amount of customization plays to the second category.  Again, you guys know how common this is and to what extent this category is key to your business model.

For me: I am a site administrator in the second category.  My sponsor out here is a major corporation that has a few sites and plans for many more.   It would seem to me that they fit the class of client you are interested in.

It makes sense to me that as they customize, they will take care to standardize their customizations across their own sites--or if they don't that is their business.  It makes sense to me that they more power you give them to customize, the better the product you are providing them.

And here is the kicker:  It seems to me that it is rare that the individual user (who may or may not experience consistency) is the one paying the big bucks to you. Rather it is the administrator of your multi-site groups.  It seems to me that that is the person who you are selling to and to whose needs you need to address.

But as I say, I don't know your business.  I am just a frustrated site administrator...

Hi Danny,

We appreciate your feedback, and I am sorry you are frustrated!  The conversation that you referenced took place in November 2010.  Since that time, we have adjusted our direction to accommodate our user base, in particular, our large Enterprise clients. We have a developed a master ticket to address customizing your Groupsite to be able to turn on and off the areas of the site that are significant/relevant to your Group.  I do not yet have a time frame for implementation as this master ticket is currently being priced and weighed to establish the work required to implement, the appropriate priority and resources required.

Thanks.

I will check to see if we are an "enterprise" client; I don't know if they want me to say publicly who this is, but if you track through my identity to the site I am managing, their name is in the footer.

But it sounds as though the functionality is in the future.   I do encourage you all to find a way to permit your enterprise clients some access to CSS as this is being built out.  In the meantime, I continue to explore ways to building my own functionality around the edges of what is permitted.
