It would be great if there was a simple voting module or survey module so managers could create a vote or survey that members could respond to.

Agreed. This is a valuable tool for group engagement. While our development team continues to be very busy with existing tasks, we suggest you take a look at polldaddy.com as a viable 3rd party option that can be embedded as a widget.
