Just speaks to the need for Groupsite mobile;-)  I have an iPhone and can navigate most of a groupsite, but I would love to see an iPhone app for Groupsite!  Everything is going mobile.  I wish I could help you out with the Berry.

I will chime in on the request for mobile support (I sent "Support" an email on this a while back).

The majority of our members rely on their Blackberry phones to keep up to date with email and various websites, as they are not sitting at a desk, accessing their computers regularily.  They have attempted to access their Groupsite in order to stay connected and participate in the ongoing conversations within the groupsite.  However, they are finding it much too difficult to do this using their Blackberry phones (no plain text version of either the site or emails) and their participation is dropping off.  The Groupsite and members suffer from the loss of their participation and the mobile phone users suffer since it is when they are in the field, relying solely on their mobile phone for access, that they really need access to the content within the Groupsite.

However, given Groupsites "90% rule" ("features that 90% of our user will use 90% of the time") does the request that Groupsite support mobile phone devices fit that rule?  Realistically, perhaps no - not at this very moment, but it sure does seem like accessing web content with a variety of devices is the future.

Does Groupsite.com have a mobile strategy?  Are there plans in the pipeline for developing mobile capabilities?  I see this as a highly critical issue.

To support the 90% rule, they need to hear about this need from more people!

I will add my name to the list, would love to see a slim mobile viewport for smartphones!  Beyond that, a dedicated iPhone app would be a great asset.

Hi, everyone. There's no doubt that access to mobile content is becoming important to more and more people -- and so mobile capability is important. The first steps Groupsite.com will take to address this is to provide users with the ability to:

- receive email as plain text (including Recent Activity Updates)

- reply to a discussion directly from his/her inbox

In looking at our client base, we believe adding these 2 things will address the core of the mobile functionality that our users are asking for today.

Great to hear, Diana!  Your response is much appreciated.  The first steps you've listed will be a great help - not only to mobile users - thanks!

Diana,

Greetings, What is the progress on blackberry compatibility.  This is an embarrasing misstep for me, as I just recommended my entire board go to a subgroup I created only to hear the feedback that they could not use the site via the blackberry.

My iphone pulls the data fine, but when I try to put the cursor into the basic area field, it does not recognize it, or allow  me to type anything from my iphone.

This could be a deal killer, and yes mobile is the future....  Help

Michael - We agree, mobile is the future.

Today, 33,000 + Groupsites are just starting to realize that social networking tools can actually be used for meaningful work and not just updating your status of what mood you are in or who you voted for on American Idol.

Tomorrow, more groups will leave their old-school listservs, Yahoogroups and stop wrestling with SharePoint to create Groupsites for social collaboration.

In the future, social collaboration online will be a must-do for all groups and mobile will play a big part.

We want to be the leader in self-serve social collaboration, today, tomorrow and in the future.

Please bear with our 3 hard-working developers as we attend to the many needs of today. We know Blackberry users have a rough time on the web through their RIM devices and we hope to give them some relief soon.

btw - I just had a chat with Steve Jobs who seems to think that an iPad strategy will be more fruitful than a mobile strategy, but what does he know?

I just wanted to add my voice to the call for Blackberry compatibility because my client is extremely disappointed to learn that their members cannot sign up via Blackberry. They encourage participants at an in-person event to join the community, but want them to be able to sign up onsite, rather than waiting to go home and likely lose the momentum at the in-person event. If you can provide any guidance at all as to when you anticipate addressing at least the sign up issue for Blackberries, that would be very helpful to my clients.

thanks for recognizing and prioritizing Blackberry access.  Crucial!

Amadie - I don't have an estimate for when Groupsites will be compatible with Blackberries, but we do believe mobile access is important.

Here's what I suggest regarding sign-up for Blackberry users at your live event. If you can, set...

  • computers up with Internet access to your Groupsite.

  • your Groupsite's visibility to Limited

  • your Groupsite's membership to By Approved Request or By Invitation

Then, your attendees can request to join right on the spot. You can review and approve their requests from another computer, or after the event.

In fact, if content permits, set the Groupsite visibility and membership restrictions even more loosely: make the visibility Public and membership Anyone Can Join. You can always tighten these settings back up and remove unwanted members after the event.

You can learn more about visibility and membership settings here: http://champions.groupsite.com/post/visibility-membership-settings

You'll make the most of the momentum for everyone in attendance - not just the Blackberry users.

I hope this helps and if you have any questions, just let us know.

Mobile support is essential for our group to continue using the application.  Do you have a timeline?  It's not just a matter of signing up, we also need to be able to easily add comments to discussion threads from mobile devices.
