Using the invitation for subgroup invitations

The invitation feature for subgroups is confusing. When you click on "Invite Groupsite Members" you get the list of grgoupsite members but are you automatically sending them one of the custom invitations or do they just get a pop-up?

When you invite an existing member of a Groupsite to join a subgroup, they do not receive an emailed invitation. What happens is the next time they log-in to the Groupsite, they simply receive a pop-up window that says they have been invited to the subgroup and they can simply select accept or decline.
