Has anyone uploaded an instant messenger feature on their Groupsite?

Can anyone recommend any?

I want my group members to be able to talk to each other in real time.

Thanks Samer.

Christine,

If you were still looking, I recently embedded a Wideget from www.shoutmix.com in my Groupsite. The basic Chat Room is free and you can have Customizable Paid Widget for $20 an year. I tried several in the market and found this to be useful and Cheaper.

Hope this helps.

I have 2 small groups but they are using the free version of Groupsite.  I assume that you can only use instant messaging (by embedding widgets) if you have the paid version, correct?

There is no instant messaging right now. Would like this to be added the near future.

Sanjay, this is quite dissapointing.  It seems like instant messaging would be a natural application on Groupsite.

Can you tell me how I can embed the Shoutmix widget on our Groupsite?  I'm not sure I can do this with the free version.

Thanks.

It's Free. With Premium version, you could have more control. I believe it's $2 a month. But really this is not working very well for me reason being it's not a one-on-one chat and the Groupsite Profiles are not integrated. So, it's very useful if the Groupsite team developed one that integrates directly with in a Groupsite.

Yes, I agree with you.  This is just a "shoutbox" not an "instant messenger" so it's not useful for real-time communication among group members.

I agree that Groupsite needs to add this as module quickly!

Folks - The only thing that would be better than instant messaging is more hours in the day so our small dedicated development team could get everything done that is on our present and future to-do list.

We like this idea and look forward to being able to offer this in the future.

Today, support and reliability and performance of existing features are our top priority.

Thanks,

Shaun

I'm not seeing how to embed a shoutmix. How is this done?

Hi Ms, Downs,

Steve Veach is probably in a better position to respond to that question them me.  he's actually tried Shoutbox.  Does it come with an embedded URL/code that you can upload to a content module?

Ms Downs, I provide reasonably detailed instructions in the link I reference in my post above using a free application called FreeJavaChat.

I assume you've read all the comments and realize that this is not the same as an Instant Messaging application and that everyone sees everyone else's typed messages.  Furthermore, the messages are stored on an off-site server so they aren't secure.

There are other issues that make this a less than optimum solution but I can't remember all of them--they are probably in my comments.

Again, the only real solution is integrated messaging within Groupsite but they haven't implemented that yet.

Thanks Steve!  FYI, without giving specific dates, this is our current line-up for workload that will take us through the end of the year:

1. Move our Groupsite. com Platform to Engine Yard

2. Enterprise Dashboard

3. Reply to Discussion/Email Blasts from you Email Inbox

(We may add in creating multiple discussion forums for Subgroups)

First quarter 2011 is when we begin working on Social Collaborative releases.  This is when we will have movement on integrating messaging within Groupsite.  We will keep you posted.

Sincerely,

Celeste,

Thank you for the update. What is Engine Yard ?  How does it differ from the current platform ?
