I'd like to see the ability for any member of the Group to search all subgroups without joining them (with the option for a subgroup to be private). I'd also like to see the ability to assign subgoups to people.
Hi Timothy,
We're sorry for your frustrations and understand your concerns. We do not have the ability to turn off select features today with the exception of a few. We do understand that not all of these features are used in every Groupsite, however, it's our job to make sure that users are aware of what the platform has to offer. This encourages users to take advantage of all of these different functions.
The first four tabs, SUMMARY, COMMUNICATE, SHARE, NETWORK, are consistent in every Groupsite and cannot be changed. However, the last two can be removed. You can disable subgroups by accessing your MANAGER tab, Group Settings subtab, Subgroup Controls. Select the option to disable subgroups and the SUBGROUPS tab will disappear for all of your members. All managers will still be able to see it. The MORE tab will be removed to all members as long as you do not have any additional pages created. Features like E-mail Blast can be disabled to members under Permission Controls (so members won't see a "Create Blast" button); however, the sub-tab will still display because it's under one of the four main tabs.
We hope this helps make your Groupsite experience a little simpler.
Ravi
Hi Rick,
Members of the Groupsite can search for any non-private subgroup in the Subgroup Directory. Members and content can be searched upon in all public subgroups, and the SUMMARY page can be viewed in Limited subgroups. You must be a member of a Limited subgroup to view the rest of the content. Private subgroups are not displayed in the directory.
Also, we currently have the feature for auto-assigning members to subgroups in beta and it's being tested in several Groupsites. This will be available for Groupsite PRO Accounts. We'll make a full announcement once the feature goes live.

Maybe our problem is too many subgroups (we have 17), but to look in all 17 separately is a little awkward. It would be nice if group members could search from the summary page and have it include ALL subgroups, not just the ones they have joined. Some discussions are not easy to classify, and often cross multiple 'subgroups'.
Auto assigning subgroups will help alleviate the problem. By making everyone a member of every subgroup, their searches will be easier, although the 'noise level' of the system will be higher.
Rick - This may help: use a freeform text module with hyperlinked text or graphic to take people straight to the directory when clicked. After one click, they will be in the directory where Public and Limited visibility subgroups will show up for all members to see.
Also, if you're considering putting every member into every subgroup, you may want to consider hosting those discussions in your main group-level Discussion forums, instead.
