Can you make it optional for the managers to decide if it shows up or not? That would be nice.
@Liza - regarding subgroup Discussion links taking you to the main forum page (bug):
When you click "Click Here to Join Discussion" from an email notification or from a Recent Activity link on your SUMMARY page, you should now go directly into that discussion forum. (We believe we've squashed this bug but do let us know if you see otherwise/Ticket #1691).
Note: if you have an old email that was formerly taking you to the main forum page (instead of directly into the forum) this fix won't apply -- as these have already left our system. It will prevent the problem from happening in any new email notifications.
Regarding "it seems odd to be taken directly to the Discussion Forums page after creating a post in a subgroup" -- we agree! Thanks for pointing this out, Liza. Not sure if it's a related issue and I've requested a fix for this / Ticket #1780).
It's still happening for me. :(
CAPT McDonald and Liza,
From a manager perspective, can you explain a little more about how you use this information to herd/steer members -- what would you do once you could see this information in the member's profile? Also, I imagine as a manager you would need to see even private subgroup subscriptions (as opposed to a general member, who would not, unless they were also a member of that subgroup).
Also, I'm wondering if it would be useful to add a "subgroup subscriptions" field to each member's record that you could export as a manager.
Lastly, Liza - can you share why it would be important to have the ability to decide whether or not subgroup subscriptions display in a member's profile? From a user perspective, I see knowing what Limited or Public subgroups another member is associated with could be useful - I learn more about what the user is involved with and can reach out accordingly. (If the subgroup is private, it would not display to me unless I was also a member of that subgroup).
Liza - can you tell me where this is happening for you? Also, if it's from an old email that was formerly linking to the wrong page - the fix won't apply. (I just updated my post above to better explain).
Diana
New members do not intuitivly "jump" to multiple subgroups..it seems that they are so proud of themselves that they found their way into the main site that the notion that there is more to do.. is overwhelming...if someone does not belong to a subgroup but still wants to be on the main site that means that as a manager, there must be some subgroup that I have not/do not know about...the opportunity to become aware of multiple subgroups is a very value added feature of a "primary theme" groupsite. The subgroups are the focus item within the "main theme" that is stimulating to the community.
Hi, Liza - I talked to our developers regarding subgroup Discussion links taking you to the main forum page (bug):
- We saw this happen occasionally, in seemingly random instances. Last week, we deployed a fix which corrected most cases.
- When this happens, it's because an error has occurred and instead of delivering a message, the link takes the user to the main forum. While we've squashed most cases of this happening, there may still be some isolated instances. We'll add a message to display to the user with instructions to help them get on their way -- and will also work to remove those instances.
- As a Groupsite Champion, we always appreciate your feedback! If you do see any more examples of this, please let us know.
Thanks, Diana. I see now that I never replied to your question from the 9th. It would not be a problem at all to have subgroups showing if they are not private. I guess I assumed he meant even the private ones. I actually like the idea of non-private subgroups showing. :)
I'm seeing this same bug with emails I get from the subgroup discussion. When I click to join the discussion, it is going to just the main discussion page, not to the specific discussion thread.
Hi, Chris. Is it possible to forward to me any emails where you see this happening? This has been a tough one for us to nail. The issue doesn't happen in all forums/topics. Please send them to support@groupsite.com and thanks for your help in this.
Here are some suggestions to make subgroups more effective:
1) Settings should be available to allow subgroup administrator(s) to perform for subgroup(s) tasks that either "managers only" or "all members" could currently be allowed to perform. (For example, I am not aware of a way to allow use of Email Blasts only by subgroup administrator(s) (and groupsite manager(s) as well) without have to allow it for all members of the subgroup.)
2) Also, subgroup adminstrators should be (optionally) allowed to edit the subgroup Administration page (to specify on their own an external web address, directory description, additional home page content, name, short name, etc.), unless it is already possible and I am not so aware.
3) A virtual "dummy" user account should allow a groupsite manager to simulate and see what a user with any given status or access may see and do from his/her own account (without impersonating that user).
Here is an additional suggestion to make subgroups more effective:
Whenever a setting allow either the "manager" or "all users" to use a certain function (e.g. email blasts, discussions blasts, sending event invitations, etc.), there should be a way to allow "all users" to use that feature only within subgroups to which they belong and not at the main level.
As a result, for instance, a large group would be able to allow members in its various subcommittees to use blast features to others, but only in respect of the activities of their respective subgroups, preventing a regular member from using the blast feature to send a message to all the other members of the group, without preventing the same user from doing so in respect of the subgroup activities.
(As already suggested previously, this also assumes that subgroup administrator(s) could be allowed to perform subgroup(s) tasks that currently either "managers only" or "all members"are allowed to perform.)
Aside from my previous suggestions in this topic, I would suggest to add the possibility for managers to create subgroups in batch (for instance from an online table or preferably through importation of data from a .xls or .csv file, using a preformatted template that help users avoiding the need to do some field mapping when importing the data from the file).
I realize that this may not be used by a majority of groupsite managers, but would certainly help some managers to quickly replicate the organizational structure of larger groups (e.g. associations that comprise several chapters in numerous cities or countries); it would also give additional incentive to users to subscribe to the unlimited subgroups feature and larger groups to find groupsite appropriate for their needs.
yeah baby....
Still want the ability to "assign" subgroup membership..
huge increase in productivity....!!!
Like an earlier user, I too am frustrated by the inability to disable certain functions. Our site is called streatamartists.groupsite.com and we need a really basic discussion board with only one thread. All we need is the Group Blog with a "Write a Post" option only, maybe with comments on these but not really necessary.
We certainly do not need "Discussions" or "Subgroups". (We only need "Email Blast" available to managers). However I cannot take these off the users pages and have had to put rather ugly red banners across the tops saying they are not in use. Not very pretty on an otherwise well designed site.
Is there any way of deleting or hiding the "Discussions", "Email Blast" and "Subgroups" tabs?
