Making It Your Own - Customizing for the Sake of Customizing

Everyday, someone asks me, "How come I can't have access to the Groupsite.com CCS style sheets so I can redesign my Groupsite to look exactly they way I want my design to look?" or "Why can't I have access to your API so I can integrate your Groupsite into my existing infrastructure?"

Answer: I don't even know what a CSS style sheet is.

Some people buy a PC and immediately start reconfiguring it, changing operating systems, writing new code to make amazing things happen and spend days tweaking their computer environment to work exactly they way they want instead of the way the "evil empire" intended.

Others walk into an Apple store, buy an iMac, go home, plug it in and start having fun and making things happen.

My wife is pretty.  I don't need my computer to be pretty.  I need it to be easy to use.

Next time you hear someone complaining about the design limitations of a web-based service, ask yourself, "Are they really interested in helping the users make things happen in the simplest way, or are they just customizing things for the sake of customizing things?"

Simpler is always better.
