Sub-Forums

I am very interested in sub-groups.  But another feature that would be helpful to us is sub-forums in the discussions.  We are struggling with the need for too many forums.  But we have some hierarchy.  For example, we'd like to have a forum for "Clubs".  Under that we might have a dozen sub-forums.  But we wouldn't want to list all of those forums at the top level so it stays cleaner.

Thoughts?

We launch with our users on Monday and we're excited.

Chris - "sub" or "nested" forums have been around for a long time.  The challenge is, while intended to help organize things, they often become so bloated that the average newbie has no idea where to find anything as they continue to dig and eventually give up.

Here is a suggestion. Upgrade to our Content Customization feature ($9/mth) if you have not already so you will have the ability to create "new pages". Use these new pages as a way to direct your members through the wealth of growing information in your Discussion areas by any of the following:

  • Using the "Featured Discussion" view of a Discussion module a make an entire new page devoted to a series of these modules highlighting different topics

  • Create your new page as a wide Freeform Text module and list your Forum categories anyway you wish making the text hotlinks like this:

Best Practices Form

One group I am aware of as already done some pretty cool things like this, checkout www.yapstar.org to see some pretty cool ways to use new pages.

Hope that helps,

Shaun

Shaun,

How do we do nested forums with the free site?  Underneath a forum there is no option to create another forum.  I understand the concern about nesting data

Chris

Chris - Sorry if my post wasn't clear.  We do not have "nested forums" as a feature (free or paid).

In a free Groupsite, add a Freeform Text Module to your SUMMARY page and list your Links to forums there.  You can "nest" the links even though they are actually pointing to Forums that all reside at the top level (which is the only place Forums exist in a Groupsite).  Did that make sense? My contact info is on my profile if you want to give me a shout.

Thanks,

Shaun
