Immediate Email notification option

We have some users of our groupsite that prefer email for all discussion posts, but would like them to come immediately vs. in the daily digest.  Would it make sense to have an option on preferences to allow for someone to get immediate email for posts?  Perhaps coupled with that, folks could subscribe/unsubscribe from different discussion categories.

Does that make sense?

Thanks,
Chris

Chris - We have this today at the topic level. Below each post there is a "subscribe" link. When subscribed to a topic, you will get instant emails of all replies. Under the "My Settings" tab, then the "My Preferences" sub-tab, under My Enail Preferences you can set it so you automatically "subscribe" to any topic that yu reply to.

Soon we will have the ability to "subscribe" to an entire Discussion Forum.  That being said, we are not trying to be an old school list-serv that lives completely in someone's inbox.  We all use email but also believe that most inboxes have become very dysfunctional with the glut of spam, reply-all and other messages that we are barraged with daily.  A Groupsite is designed to be a destination that helps it's members engage as well as keep relevant information in a place that is easy to find.

Hope that helps,

Shaun

Agree 100% Shaun.  It is a transition for folks that are used to listserv-like groups and want everything in their inbox even if they never go to the groupsite.  I'm just looking for ways to accommodate all styles of users who will interact with our group.  So for folks who want all posts as email from the beginning, there really is no way to do that.  Our "work-around" is to ask people to who post to check the "send to all" box when creating a new discussion.

Thanks,

Chris

Cool. I have posted a couple of times that we have seen a 20-20-60 rule hold pretty true for most listserves (of any size).

20% of the list are active posters - when they move to a Groupsite, they are even more active and 100% of them enjoy the new environment.

20% of the list are lurkers who never post but get value from reading from others - usually only 50% of these type make the switch when moving to a Groupsite.  The ones that do, typically start becoming more active.

60% are deadwood who just don't know how or haven't taken the time to unsubscribe - none of these folks will make the move to Groupsites with you but you don't really have them now.

As a result, most listservs who migrate to our platform initially lose a significant number of members but have an increase in activity.  Shortly thereafter, the Groupsite earns the reputation of being the place where meaningful things are happening and the size of the group grows above what the intial listserv membership was.

Transitions are always a challenge and we welcome all feedback that can help smooth the process.

Thanks,

Shaun
