Read-Only Access to certain Members

Is there a way that I can restrict access to some of the members of the group to only read the Discussions but not allowed to post any ???? This would be one of the feature that I will be using most. Can someone share any Tip on how I can implement this ...

How do I change the File Cabinet 'default folder' when uploading docs to the discussion forum? | 2 | 0 | 1817 |
Sanjay - We do not have a way to do this. In fact, since we are all about group engagement, read only is a bit counter-intuitive to our mission of helping groups communicate, share and network. Our focus is on trying to make it easy for all group members to be active participants.

Shaun - This might be very useful for me. This is one of the Features that is useful to me(which is in Google Groups) to use against some of the members who violate the Terms and Conditions of the Group especially when they try to use the Site for commercial purpose(in my case). Rather than suspending them, I would prefer giving them Read Only Access for a while and re-grant them full membership permissions whenever they say that they will abide by the Rules and Regulations.
Does that make sense ?
I would like to do something similar. I am helping manage a discussion forum for beta testing and would like to set permissions on certain users to only see specific discussion topics/forums. Is there any way to do this or if I created a new page could I restrict the access to that new page to certain users?
thanks,
Shaun,
Would you consider implementing this once the Tagging Feature is Live? I would Prefer one of my Sub-Groups to have only Read-Only Permissions to restrict them from Posting unwanted messages. I hope this will be a definite requirement for some of the existing Groupsites.
Does that make Sense?
Hi group managers!
Thought I'd chime in. I agree with Shaun that the whole idea of a groupsite is to promote some discussion engagement with the group members. If they are being disruptive, I think all is needed is to send them a warning and then suspend or remove them from the group.
They key issue is dealing with new posts that are self-promotional or off-topic in nature. From my experience, these posts can be easily moved or removed as needed and then send an email to the "abuser" along with a copy of your policy (or rules) which apply.
It's really the same thing, and all the while they can still read other posts, unless they've been suspended. I've never had to use the suspension feature, so I don't know how much access such members still have, but I imagine they can't access the groupsite, but if they get reinstated, all their profile data will still be there.
The other option is to do stricter filtering of new members joining the group. This will likely reduce the chances of people joining who aren't a good fit for the group in the first place.
There's probably no simple solution, but you guys made some good points. A possible solution might be that when a member is put in suspension, they could still access the site but would not be able to post or send private emails until their "issue" has been resolved with a group manager.
The current Suspension feature could work as a "Level 1" security, and for example, the "Level 2" suspension would work as described above, to add an extra level of security. It's a bit more aggressive to help control certain kinds of unwelcome behavior.
Just my 2 cents,
Michael
