How is "Notifications" different from "Recent Activity" ?

I saw this morning that there is a Notifications icon on the menu bar with number of recent activity discussions. How is this different from Recent Activity ? I already have all of those in the Discussions section of Recent Activity. Not sure if I am missing anything.
