New Subgroup Interface

The New Subgroup interface looks nice. The only drawback that I see is the overlap of the Main Group header with the Subgroup header. It would be nice if we have an option to remove the Main group header so that we can have a separate site like appearance for the Subgroup. Overall, it's a nice improvement.

Hi Sanjay,

Nice idea, interesting!  But, we have to revisit a change like that at a later time.

Hello,

I have to say I am rather irritated by the way in which the new subgroup interface has been deployed. The first I heard of these changes was an email informing that they would happen tomorrow - no questions asked. There was no forewarning to managers of the change, nor any opportunity to comment. As such, we have no opportunity to review the impact of the changes, nor warn our own members.

While I find most of the changes positive, the size of the subgroup header is much too big - which I can't control.

I understand that GroupSites provide a low cost solution for providing us with great web-portal functionality, and that I trade low cost for more limited flexibility and control than other solutions.

However, the reality is that we use GroupSites to provide a service to our members, and, as managers of GroupSites, it needs to be recognised that changes may impact our members. As such, we need some opportunity to do an impact assessment of a pending change, and the ability to warn our members if necessary. The opportunity to comment on a pending change would also be appreciated.

Interested in your comments.

Cheers,

Nick

Hi Nick,

I am sorry that the way we handled the release of the new Subgroup User Interface left you in an irritated state.  This enhancement was made because our users found it difficult to navigate the old subgroup interface without getting confused about where they were.  We discussed it in Champions:

We actually released this change ahead of schedule.  The date that we used when we discussed the new Subgroup User interface was October.  We were going to release it at the same time as "replying to discussions from Email".  Since it was ready, and our customers wanted this released sooner rather than later, we released it ahead of schedule.

Because of the massive changes involved, we could not release this feature to just a few Groups first for beta-testing. That is the period that we generally have to talk about an upcoming Feature like we did with Mobile and Subgroup Auto Assign.

Our internal focus of late has been on improving the overall health of our platform,  getting out new features and enhancements that we planned on-time, and improving our response time for Support and Champion inquiries. We absolutely could have done a better job with communicating this enhancement ahead of time!  But with limited resources, we have to make choices.  We will try to do better next time.

Sincerely,

I am delighted by the design choices that you have made to implement improvements to the subgroup navigation and management.

For the moment, I have the following 2 comments to provide as feedback further to the release of the changes:

  1. Since the menu item "« MAIN GROUPSITE" has been added to the navigation bar when a user is in a subgroup, I would suggest to remove "Main" from the choices offered in the "Rename Summary Page" setting of the "Content customization" options, at least when subgroups are activated (you could consider to replace it by the term "Overview"). Otherwise, this create a situation where the following 2 navigation tab would be found side-by-side, leading to potential confusion: "« MAIN GROUPSITE"  "MAIN"

  2. The menu shortcut items that can be added to the navigation bar in the "Content Customization" settings do not currently behave like the other navigation items, given that they do not keep the user in the subgroup item corresponding to the shortcut when the user in a subgroup section, but bring him to the main groupsite item. From a user standpoint, the predictability principle to follow would be that the shortcut menu items are also context-sensitive.

Thanks Celeste,

Please don't get my wrong: the changes are generally positive, and I appreciate that GroupSite is developing changes that are being asked for.

What I would really like to see is that GroupSite find some method to communicate planned changes, like these, ahead of time. Perhaps a blog on this site, for example.

I acknowledge that beta testing new changes with GroupSite managers may be a little ambitious, although this would obviously be appreciated if it were possible.

Thanks,

Nick

Hi Nick,

Adding our planned changes into our Group Blog is a very reasonable request that we will implement,  or in this case, bring it back.  We have done this in the past, but moved away from it due to limited resources.  I will figure out a way to get it done.

Excellent. Thanks Celeste.

Nick

Hi Marcel,

Thanks for your feedback. I will pass this information on to the development team. Item 1 does look a little strange when you change the name of the "Summary" page to "Main".

Sincerely,
