Stopping Spam?

Is there any way to stop people/companies from joining my Groupsite and posting HTML-based spam messages? I tried setting my default to "open by invitation or request" hoping I could stop the people before they join, but so many people join our site on a daily basis (which I guess is a good problem to have) that it took too long to manage all the request. But, about three or four times a week I'm getting a new "member" joining and then posting messages in the Discussion forums for Russian brides and online video chat and the like.
Can you help?
