Chat & IM
I would like to hear from champions how you are getting around the lack of a built-in chat client for Groupsite.
I have been looking at an implementation of Meebo (www.meebo.com). While it *is* yet another ID and may limit your take-rate due to having to sign up for another service, Meebo goes beyond a simple chat box and allows you to tie together ALL IM clients into one pipe, so they can chat via your widget regardless of what client they are logged into.
You can also set up a permanent URL link to a chatroom, with various options for privacy or wide-open chatting.
But, yes, the downside is yet another "please signup for an ID" request, which we know not all users will do.
Any other ideas out there?
I do find it curious that Groupsite has a "users online" function, but it doesn't seem to me to serve any purpose. I can "PM" a user, which simply sends an email and doesn't need to be real time, but otherwise there does not appear to be any live interaction we can do. Am I missing anything there?

Hi Mark,
Groupsite.com Chat is actually ready. I really like what we did with this feature, and we have received great feedback from the Groups who currently have the feature enabled in their Groupsites. Development completed the implementation of Chat several months ago. We have not yet released this functionality to the masses because we were tackling some connection issues that occur with certain users in Australia using IE8. We're continuing to do what we can on our end to address as much of the
latency issues that we can... short of having servers in Australia.
Development has given the Green Light to release the Chat feature, but unfortunately, we are holding up things in Support. We're still working on FAQs etc. and trying to decide if we are going to release another feature that we have ready to go at the same time. This feature is Groupsite Registration/Sign Up Required Entries.
In Groupsites that qualify for this new feature, during the registration process, Groupsite Managers will be able to
select between "required", "optional", and "not asked" for each
supported field. Required fields will have to be filled in to complete
registration, optional fields will appear on the registration form, but can be left blank.
default, postal code will be required and gender will be optional, but
groups who qualify for this new feature will be able to override this. So, groups that
are sensitive about gender will be able to set it so it is not asked
during registrati
That’d be great if you could enable the chat function for us. I set up a 3rd party version but am not happy with the look or functionality…
Cheers,
Mark Wright
