Chat & IM

I would like to hear from champions how you are getting around the lack of a built-in chat client for Groupsite.

I have been looking at an implementation of Meebo (www.meebo.com).  While it *is* yet another ID and may limit your take-rate due to having to sign up for another service, Meebo goes beyond a simple chat box and allows you to tie together ALL IM clients into one pipe, so they can chat via your widget regardless of what client they are logged into.

You can also set up a permanent URL link to a chatroom, with various options for privacy or wide-open chatting.

But, yes, the downside is yet another "please signup for an ID" request, which we know not all users will do.

Any other ideas out there?

I do find it curious that Groupsite has a "users online" function, but it doesn't seem to me to serve any purpose.  I can "PM" a user, which simply sends an email and doesn't need to be real time, but otherwise there does not appear to be any live interaction we can do.  Am I missing anything there?

Scott, I had the same question and look forward to the feedback.

The best solution would be to have Groupsite.com build one to be an integrated to the Groupsite. I believe IM and Chat is an important feature(at least as a premium) that should be there within a group for quick messaging.

Basically we need this feature to use the platform efficiently. Needed URGENTLY !

I have to aggree.. I would really love to see a chat feature added in here.

Most importantly we need a One-on-One chat built-in. Not a widget box similar to Meebo or Shoutmix.

I also agree with this post.  Chat needs to be integrated into the platform - both synchronous and asynchronous.  Soon!

IM and Chat will happen. They won't be done urgently. They are politely waiting their place in line with all of the other enhancements that our team is working diligently on along with keeping existing features running smoothly.

I the meanwhile, both of these features are already freely available from Meebo as free plugin widgets.

Meebo is a terrible temporary replacement for chat.  It doesn't look like it belongs in the site and like the original post stated, its just another module that people need to have an id for.    It really wouldn't be that hard for one of you developers to put together a simple ajax chat room that would already have the name of user that is logged in.  And yes, I have already done it myself in the past.

I already had a ShoutMix, but couldn't get my members use much. Even Meebo would be the same. We really need something that syncs the Robust Profile system, Online members module and some solution to identify members who are available for chat. Facebook chat is working for me really well and it's very well designed.

I personally Feel That instead of the typical "chat room" option. One (meaning groupsite) would need to create a "twitter" widget with can be incorporated into the groupsite or group page.. This would offer a realtime (refresh rate required) response system with the added safety features and "One on One system of commands.

Just seem that the real online chats are not as user friendly as many of would hope for. After spending years at chat room like Yahoo.. I found that now these chats room are nothing more then user oriented bot control panels. and at time I feel (thou Yahoo deny this) that the bots are yahoo controlled in an attempt to "make extra" money for them self. Just the simple act of clicking the bots name or responding to their message can put money into the bots owner. Thus no one is willing to leave yahoo chats anytime soon.

So create a "live" chat if you wish.. But look forward to it going to waste and not being used afterward.

Not sure if the previous poster literally meant using Twitter for live chat, but some of us are creating closed communities and Twitter is not a good solution.  If you're already using Twitter, you and all your fellow groupsite group members would have to create new locked Twitter accounts for business or community use, which means you need to use another email address to sign up (or use the Gmail workaround, but not everyone has a Gmail account...).  Otherwise, all your followers will see tweets meant for your Groupsite members.  And is Twitter actually able to keep private tweets private?  Not sure their system is that reliable.  Then there's the matter of uptime and backup....

I would like to see a solution that is integrated with Groupsite, and looks like Groupsite, but whose API is compatible with services like iChat and Digsby, so if you wanted to you could aggregate all your live chat feeds in one place.

Also, it would be nice to be able to tag chats or chat elements and be able to search for the tags within the groupsite space to pull up stored chat session.  And, insert hyperlinks in chat messages that go to files stored on groupsite (take you directly to the file location).

Carol..

Again.. this was my personal view and I wasn't responding to any direct statement.. other then my own. My issue is, I have grown tired of "live Chats" due to the fact I'm unable to keep up with chats as well as respond back in a respectable length of time. My limitations hinder me from speaking in a text live format, thou a voice live format could be an alternative.

As I was stating.. the live chats as well as many types of forums are diapering.. Persona are not willing to face the confrontations with live chats. However if its within a group or company setting, then the live aspect would be acceptable.. even using MSN, Yahoo messengers would work in this aspect..

I believe that if one creates an "open social ID" they will gain all the necessary access to all accounts on the openid network.

Our,  thanks for the clarification.  I've used chats for work for short updates etc., and the advantage I can see for a groupsite integrated chat client is the tagging and linking.  Otherwise, as you suggest, openID will work nicely outside of the groupsite collaboration space.

I posted in the hopes that someone from Groupsite is noting some of the feature/functionality requests ;)

Hope you have a good weekend.

Carol - We are listening and taking notes.

Please be aware that in addition to just hours in the day {our biggest challenge}, we always need to pay critical attention to making sure all of our features are created in such a way that everyone can use them on day one. This includes users that have never tweeted, chatted or IM'd. We want to be the social collaboration toll "for the rest of us" not just the digiratti who understand how all the latest gizmos work.

Please keep the feedback coming.

Thanks,

Shaun

please dont use meebo, i suggest to use USERPLANE, it has featured of Audio/ Video CHAT !! its very nice!

regards,

terrence
