Calendar Changes/Additions
Here are few ideas for calendar changes (#2 is critical)
1) Any chance we could have couple custom fields added to the event entry form?
We currently have:
Event Name
Description
Location
All Day Event
From
To
Repeat
Display As
RSVP
I'd like to add few more custom fields such as:
Cost of Event
Web Site URL
Contact Email
Contact Phone number
Event Organizer
Ultimately giving admins the right to add calendar questions should be done in the same fashion as custom registration questions.
2) On/Off switch for RSVP option. Not sure if it is there already, don't see it. I think by default every event has the RSVP option ON. Reason why ON/OFF switch is important is that people may think I am organizing the event and by RSVP-ing they're registering for it, when in fact some 3rd party is responsible for taking RSVP info outside of my Groupsite.
3) Calendar disclaimer text. Admins should be able to display a default disclaimer text or message whenever user views an event. Something that says this event is not sponsored or endorsed by this Groupsite and that the event organizer is solely responsible for the event in case it cancels or fills up.
4) Event "EXPIRATION Date" and "EVENT FULL" marker. Lets say I have an event scheduled for Oct 15 but only want it displayed on the calendar until October 1, there should be a way to EXPIRE the event and have it either marked as EXPIRED or removed from the calendar. Same would apply if # of RSVP=YES exceeds the allocated/available slots. Admin should be able to set number of seats/spots available per event, if all available slots fill up you can no longer RSVP unless someone cancels their RSVP.
That is it for today!

Love these suggestions, especially the extra fields and the "event full" marker. I'd also like a post-event feature that allows me to log who attended the event.
How about a post-event rating system similar to Amazon stars? That would rock.
Okay one more addition to the list:
5) Search calendar events by LOCATION. This would require splitting of the "location" field into Venue, Street, City, State or to simply just add one extra field for ZIP CODE, then use the Post Office Zip Code database to display location City and State.
With that users should be able to pick lets say NJ and only see NJ events or pick Philadelphia and see all Philly events. Wow this would be really cool!
Jake,
Thanks for the calendar suggestions. When we make our next calendar pass we will look at implementing some of them. You are correct that all events don't require an RSVP... and in some cases, RSVPs could reside outside of the Groupsite. I like the idea of offering an on/off mechanism for RSVPs... this is something that would be easy to implement so we may do it very soon.
Regarding the fields that you mention such as: Cost of Event; Web Site URL; Contact Email ; Contact Phone number; Event Organizer... I view them as speciality fields that aren't necessary for most event postings. However, I do see how they could be useful. As of now, they could be added to the description area for events that require them. In the future we will consider adding a few of them as a "more" option so that they are only revealed if the user needs them. We like to keep things simple (Web 2.0) by adhearing to the 90% rule - only showing or requesting information that is used by 90% of our users, 90% of the time.
I hope that helps. Keep the feedback/suggestions coming.
Regards,
Clarence
Clarence,
I was really thinking of having those extra fields "optional" and let users add them IF they want them so that way you still follow the 90% rule ;-)
Glad to hear about the RSVP switch!

One more idea for Calendar addition: TIME TBD
Some events don't have starting/ending times so entering a "dummy" time would be wrong, instead there should be a TBD option where time has not been determined as of yet.
