Gradual lead-in for new members
One of the things I am concerned about relating to the group I run is bombarding new members with email notifications and updates. The majority of the people that join my group are not familiar with these kinds of online networking groups and I worry they find it a bit overwhelming.
What would be nice would be a graded introduction to the program, spread over a few weeks. For example
1) an introductory notification that has links to some sections of the site
2) a follow-up email 1 week later that has notification details as well some further tips on using the site
3) a final email 1 week after which invites them to set their notification preferences for the future
This would give new members a nice slow introduction to the features of the site and not overload them with notifications in the first couple of weeks of membership (where I am keen to make a good impression)

This sounds like a great feature - especially for people that are new to social networking, and don't know how to use simple tools like email filters, or get overwhelmed by all the options and features as they first join the site...
Thanks Farhan - Good to hear someone else thinks this might be a nice feature. I have been pretty vigilant with my group and I send every new member an introductory email that has links to the main sections of the site and invites them to contact me if they have any questions. It seems to be working well as often they reply back and I am able to make individual contact with them. A more automated version of what I am doing would be super!
Guys,
We have taken steps to enable you (managers) to control the Amount of email (notifications) received by your members. Within group settings, we added the ability for you to make recent activity notifications opt-in versus opt-out.
Based on our experience running the CollectiveX platform, we are finding that the average users doesn't take the time to read. Consequently, we decided to take a more visual approach. You may have noticed the recent changes to our recent activity notifications. In summary, we seperated activity type into destinct categories that are displayed within notifications. To reinforce that each category can be turned off, we added icons w/ checkboxes to the right of each category heading. When clicked, the user is instantly taken to ther My Settings area enabling them to disable any or all recent activity categories.
This functionality, coupled with the mangers ability to make recent activity notifications completely opt-in, should solve most of your needs. If over time you notice that these changes (choices) do not produce the desired effect, let us you and we will re-evaluate.
Regards,
The CollectiveX Team
