Improvements in browsing members

A member complained to me yesterday that he gets frustrated because he wants to browse fellow members' profiles but its not easy or efficient. This is true at least for my group because if I want to view specific fields of information across 100 members, (Ex: the answer to a custom question or the names of the their employers), I have to do this 1 by one, and I am limited to 18 at a time. This is a time killer and gets users frustrated to the point that they give up (no one has time to go through it all). Again, this is only related to "browsing users" where a members is not searching for something that they know exists, but rather flipping through information to see who they may be interested in.

I'm definitely interested in making searching and browsing through our members more efficient. I know exactly where you're coming from.
Are you envisioning a view where you can decide which fields to show in a more compact list so you can browse through that list? As opposed to a search query where you "know what you're looking for" like you said before?
Hello Joe.
I am not exactly the expert, but VBulletin, for example, has a control that works with posts where managers can determine a set of preset quantities regarding how many posts are displayed in a page. Users can select any of the predetermined quantities (EX: 10, 20, 40, 100, 200).
In my opinion this would be a good feature to allow members to customize for their own individual purposes, or create a few default views on behalf of members.
One thing thats definitely missing is alphabetical pagination. If I am looking for my member named "Joe Khoobyar "how do I know if he is on page 6, 60, or 600? I do know his name begins with "J".
it is a tough one to work out. Thinking laterally, I wonder if there is still some room to have "featured member" feature in email notifications. You might remember my suggestion for email newsletters that contain a range of different components (all the standard stuff + new members, regular users etc). I wonder if people were seeing new members in these newsletters along the way whether this would help them identify people of interest.
As far as browsing members goes, I do like the idea of being able to select a component of profiles (e.g., personal interests) and get all the results back in one page (or broken down by 25, 50 etc). This would work nicely around the customized questions feature, especially as I am trying to customize the questions for my group to capture the essence of the member's professional work quickly and easily
Someone should go to www.dapper.com to see if they can create a widget or rss for this
