Calendar w/ Project Managment Categories

I was wondering if there is a way for the Calendar to have more of a project managment options?

I am putting in the calendar items for our project and want to label them for who they belong to, and in turn who they belong to would be able to show up as different colors in the calendar view. While I understand you all have tackled the issue by using initials it just doesnt seem like a practical way of organizing.

Secondly, is there a way to combine "filter" subgroups calendars to appear in the main group calendar, which would also solve the above task. You can just assign subgroups to your different teams, and then in the main group it combines all there calendars to get a proper time line.

Jeremy - While it wouldn't help me (since I am colorblind), I like your suggestion of using colors. One logic challenge, however, is currently, when viewing the Groupsite Calendar, you only see the subgroup events from the subgroups to which you belong along with the overall Groupsite events.

It wouldn't make sense for everyone to join every subgroup in order to see every event in a different color.

We have a number of to-do enhancements lined up for when we get to making calendar improvements and I welcome any specific suggestions you may have.

Please note, that adding features is easy - adding them in a way that is intuitive to every user and does not add complexity is a tougher task.

We never want to make a trade-off between power functionality and ease of use.

That being said, we know their needs to be a better way than adding initials (as we do in our intranet which is a Groupsite).

One question - how many color choices would you need to implement your strategy?

Thanks,

Shaun

I dont know how many color choices, but if you were able to have custom categories in the calendar (electricians, carpenters, masonry, etc.) then if those could be color coded.

I like the idea.  We will take it in to account when we do our next calender pow-wow on the "How Can We Make Grpupsites Easier To Use" whiteboard.

This is something I myself feel is lacking to CollectiveX.

For everyone to understand here is how I am using and building a CollectiveX portal for a small marketing agency business called The Ripple Hub.

We are wanting to share and co-work with external contractors and partners. I was looking for a solution that would allow us with a very confortable UI to share files, calendars, events, blogs etc... I also need to manage projects with some of the partners so I use the Sub-Groups to assign a group to a project and invite partners to that group. So far so good.

Now comes the slightly more complicated project where we really start needing task tracking, to do reminders, Time tracking, Gantt charts etc... CollectiveX does not do that.

I have researched and come accross other online tools for that particular use. So far my best shortlist is BasecampHQ for the Project management and Harvest for the time tracking.

My suggestion would be instead of trying to develop another project management tool to actually work with the Open API of those tools. In fact this would achieve two things. Help SMB users of Collectivex plug into a whole new world of possibilities as well as introduce CollectiveX to the already massively large installed base of Basecamp and Harvest users. And it would make me very happy ;-)

While you are at it ;-) you can also make sure the site integrates Google Wave for when it comes out - because that is going to be a key milestone for all groupsite solutions.

Et Voila !

Thanks for being what you are - and yes I use Ning too and you are just a class above in UI.

Wow, Jean-Philippe. What a great idea to integrate open source components into CX to increase its functionality faster and cheaper than if programmers were to create code from scratch.

Makes me wonder what other components are available that would do the same for other needs that consistently arise.

I also know this is easier said than done. Integration of code can sometimes take longer than writing code. While I'm not a programmer myself, I've worked with traditional and web-based programmers and know this from them.

So I trust that the CX team will make the best decisions and implement the best upgrades in the best order for all concerned.

I think this is where patience and faith come in.

To our ever-expanding success and joy!
