Polls

Yahoo groups is the only system I know of with this feature.  Members can create multiple- or single-choice questions and the system records votes from the group.  It then displays the statistics and a graph of the data as the votes are cast.

I have used it with my neighborhood group to determine the best cell phone providers, the types of transportation people use, how much rent has gone up, how people want to use the group, what issues are more pressing, etc.

Votes can be secret or not and the poll can have a closing time or not.  It's a lot more useful for this type of thing than using a discussion.

I agree, it will be useful also to decide activities and also to vote some kind of contests.

However, access to polls should be available for eiter all, managers and administrators or only managers.

This would be great.  We use survey monkey often to do these quick polls but it would great if this feature could be included with Collective X.  The groups can be much more effective the more they can be made into a one stop shop.

I agree completely.  LinkedIn has a great polling feature that allows you to share the data with your network.  I would love to see this on CX.

FYI, I got the the following answer on October 16, 2009 to a message to Groupsite support about a poll module:

"The idea of an integrated poll is a good one, and we've opened a ticket to consider this as an enhancement request in the future."

My message read as follows:

"Groupsite platform could eventually offer a "poll" module (as a premium feature or not) (similar to doodle.com) that would not only provide results of those who answered (anonymously or not), but that would also :

(i) make sure that a groupsite member or subgroup member cannot vote twice and may (or not depending on the settings) change its vote, and

(ii) provide the "participation rate" and/or keep track of who has not (yet) answered among the recipients of an invitation to vote among members of the a group, so that a reminder could be sent to them prior to a deadline (if a deadline was set).

Third-party widgets would not be able to provide this feature integrated with Groupsite, since they would not be aware of the membership aspect.

Given the nature of groupsite, I suspect that this would be a very useful feature for many organisations who need to make surveys and polls on an on going basis. (Ex: votes by boards or committees on certain issues, etc.)

The more internal dialog occurs on the site the more "valuable" groupsites is to the group...

Doug is correct; the options are to keep Groupsite as one of several online tools, or to have it act as a single "front end" to all of the online business functions customers require.  The latter ensures "stickiness" in that members will begin to see Groupsite as the SINGLE entry point for everything they need; there's a lot of business value in that.
