What does setting 'Subgroups' to 'Categories' do?

I am, as mentioned in my previous post, attempting to link to specific 'Subgroups' from my 'More' pages. Since there's an issue with the module 'Module -> Subgroup; View -> Feature a Subgroup' I attempted to use the 'View -> Subgroup Listings' and then specify the Subgroup I wanted to view by choosing it's 'Category' (Car Types, in this instance) in the Category Form/Combo Box:adding by subgroup listing

Note that the preview shows the Motorcycles 'Subgroup', which is not in the 'Car Types' category. I believe this is being displayed because it is the newest 'Subgroup' and the module's 'Sort' Combo Box is set to newest.

The Subgroup in question, 'Car Types', is the only Subgroup that belongs to the 'Car Types' Category. This is specified in that Subgroup's administration page:Showing that the Car Types Subgroup is in the Car Types Category

Is this the correct usage of the 'Category' setting in a subgroups administration page?

Also, it might be relevant that previously the 'Subgroups' tab was renamed to 'Category/Categories'. I changed its name back to 'Subgroups' to prevent any problem, but I understand how that naming could have caused residual effects in the code, even after changing it back.

Thanks ahead of time for your help/feedback. I look forward to seeing this work and helping you guys improve the code (if the problem isn't somewhere between the keyboard and the chair).

Beyond the whole setting featured subgroup thing, I'm still interested in what the categories are all about.

What do you guys use them for?

Josh - So now it's official.  The subgroups module (in all of it's views) is officially the buggiest module we have. Trouble tickets have been submitted to figure out what is going on.

That being said, the idea behind categories for subgroups was basically to help those few Groupsites that required a huge amount of subgroups.  We have a client (Network Referral Group) that has 65 local chapters that meet in person each month and they have created a subgroup for each chapter.  Their chapters cross 3 states so they have 3 categories (MD,VA,DC) to help sort through the list.

Quite frankly, subgroups have not existed as part of the Groupsite platform long enough for us to say we have seen any "best practices" established.

I do appreciate your taking the time to offer screen grabs of what you are seeing. This helps us try and help you.

We hope to have the subgroup module bugs squashed soon.

Thanks,

Shaun
