ADVERTISING Quality Control

Is there a better way groupsite owners/managers can work with CollectiveX to improve the quality and relevance of the ads displayed around our groupsites?

For example, my Music PAL (Publishing And Licensing) forum now has over 1,000+ music industry professionals, mostly buyers and sellers involved with music publishing and licensing. We don't mind having business, marketing and high-tech service-related ads that are relevant to our group objectives and membership profiles.

However, currently we are getting a mix of good but also very irrelevant ads which are geared for the youth/social markets with games and related social themes such as: Dream of Mirror Aeria games, IMVU 3D Chat, Shot Online Golfing, BiteFight, etc.  These kinds of game and social entertainment ads may work for teens frequenting MySpace and FaceBook, but appear out-of-place and unprofessional (to say the least) on our "all business" professional groupsite.

I've never seen this kind of ad inconsistency on LinkedIN where most of our members come from. I'm sure there's a better way to manage advertising quality control so the ads are appropriate and relevant for each unique groupsite. As owner/manager of Music PAL, I would be happy to work with the CollectiveX ad team to help filter out inappropriate ads and also encourage ads that will have the highest possible ROI CollectiveX AND its advertising clients.

As a suggestion, if groupsite owners could get involved in the ad selection process, we could potentially partner with CollectiveX and share ad revenues on a 50/50 basis.  It would take some teamwork effort with the input of knowledgeable groupsite managers who best know their members and group objectives from their daily interaction.

Thanks for your consideration!

Michael,

Your points are all valid and the offer of your time very much appreciated. Ideally, we will also like to see ads better targeted for relevance -- for the benefit of all involved. In fact, we have been investigating new ad serving options to see if we can expand our ad management abilities, including the quality of what is served (and you've been seeing a wider of variety of ads at this time because of that testing).

We do care to improve the relevancy of the ads served, and I know will work to do so. We also would like to develop a client-facing ad server in the future, to give Managers even more options and control. In the meantime, we can try:

  • when you see something completely irrelevant, shoot me an email. I'll see what we can do to remove it. (in the case of image ads, right click image to obtain its link URL)

  • consider an Ad-Free Groupsite to eliminate ads. (You may even want to experiment running your own Google, affiliate or sponsor ads, where applicable, in your Groupsite).

Hello Diana,
Thanks for your helpful response! Yes, I can certainly send you an email when I see any ads which appear irrelevant or off-topic, etc.

Regarding your second option, currently we have over 1,000 members in our discussion forum, so the cost would be at least $90/month to have an Ad-Free groupsite. This is much more than we can afford being this is a new start-up forum. The only possibility would be to "partner" with CollectiveX on a month-to-month basis in that our management would help hand-pick and monitor ads in exchange for some reasonable revenue share. This is something I could do and may take only a few "spare" hours per month to manage and monitor. It could also lead to getting involved with direct sales to bring in new ad sponsors.

Maybe this is something CollectiveX can consider as a potential (future) option for making groupsite advertising not only more targeted but also more profitable.

Thanks for the consideration!

Michael - I like you idea and as soon as our platform can allow for suvch targeting I welcome the chance to see how such a model could be a strong win-win for both of us.

Shaun,
Ok, sounds great!

For one thing, I could make an announcement to our members to make advertising available at special membership rates. Those most likely qualified and interested will have services to offer the rest of our group, so it would be an excellent match even if there's several companies that have competing services as their ads (for example) could be placed in rotation at a prorated monthly cost, etc.

Also, knowing my membership profiles from first-hand experience with real contacts, it's also very realistic to plan a great match between our group and an outside advertiser/sponsor who knows little about our members, but could be reaching his target industry.

As you can see, lot's a great possibilities that could go beyond the typical Google "AdSense" (canned & automated) approach to advertising. We could be offering "narrowcasting" at its best! Cool

Thanks for keeping me posted.
