It might be cool to have a "Featured Member" section (currently where the user's profile displays on the summary page) that picks a random member and displays their basic information.

That's an idea... I have though about displaying the photos of the most active members on the summary page as well. Possibly in the sidebar.
I would also see a benefit in controlling who the featured member would be. It would serve as a benefit to my members
I like the "active member" concept - I also see the "featured member" as a kind of internal advertising, especially if some aspect of their profile can be included.
In my group (full of practising therapists/psychologists) - a photo plus practice details plus specialty would be cool.
If the featured member concept could be included in the email notifications - that would be really interesting as well
We have kicked around the idea of have more "canned" content that can be placed in the sidebar. Theoretically, this could be one of of many possible types of content you could pick from and add without having to generate it yourself.
I agree. Giving group managers the option of featuring a group member or even displaying the photos of active group members as canned content on the summary page sidebar makes a lot of sense. Expect to see something like this in the near future.
